To help the people of interested countries in meetingtheir need for trained men and women.2. To help promote a better understanding of Americanson the part of the peoples served.3. To promote a better understanding of other peoples onthe part of Americans. As a sophomore in high school, I wrote a report for Englishclass about the book, The Ugly American. The Americans wereUS government workers and diplomats, and their uglinessstemmed from their hubris, ignorance, and disinterest in thepeople of the fictional country where they served. The book’shero, Homer Atkins, was considered ugly because of hisphysical appearance. His behavior, however, was beautiful. He lived with the natives and understood their needs. He wasbefriended by the locals and helped them in ways that mayhave been small to their country, but very important in theireveryday lives.
